“Ocupa tu Calle” (Occupy Your Street) initiative goes live

“Ocupa tu Calle” (Occupy Your Street) is an online initiative to reclaim and revitalize public spaces as places to gather and build community, as well as tools to improve public safety and reduce health risks, particularly in areas on the outskirts of cities.

The idea was the product of collaboration between Fundación Avina, the citizen oversight group Lima Cómo Vamos, UN-Habitat, Porticus, and national allies (civil society organizations, city governments, and businesses).

Through local urban interventions, “Ocupa tu calle” facilitates the reclaiming of public spaces that are not being used, the improvement of existing spaces, and the creation of new ones.

Parklets (mini parks), bike lanes, bike racks, temporary street closings for events, and other uses of public space have served not only to improve cities but also to improve relationships between residents and community well-being.
