Inclusive Recycling: First law in Brazil prohibiting the burning of solid waste is passed

The first law in Brazil prohibiting the burning of garbage was passed in 2014 in Minas Gerais, in the state of Belo Horizonte, following widespread mobilization of civil society led by the local recyclers movement.

These efforts were supported by Fundación Avina along with Movimento Nossa BH, Insea, and representative André Quintão, the author of the bill. Civil society organizations met with local representatives and employed strategies to position the issue in the public sphere, emphasizing the ecological and economic inefficiencies of this form of waste disposal.
