In 2007 and 2008, Avina supported and guided the launch of the Media and Democracy Alliance (Alianza Medios y Democracia) . Alliance members include the New Journalism Foundation (Fundación Nuevo Periodismo) led by Jaime Abello, the Study Program in Journalism (Programa de Estudios en Periodismo – PEP) of the Universidad Javeriana led by Germán Rey, and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
Avina’s support for this initiative consists of funding a full-time general project coordinator. We also provide funding for the work of the Editors’ Network, part of a project funded by UNDP and the British embassy in Colombia.
Our goals are to consolidate the alliance within the general framework of the project, and to engage the media in training and debating activities. Planned engagements include a series of four workshops on human rights and democracy for reporters, a workshop on newsroom self-analysis, a meeting of media directors as well as ongoing contact via the Editors’ Network.
