In one of the regions of Chile facing the greatest water stress, the community of Quilicura is carrying out an unprecedented action: replacing artificial intelligence with human intelligence for one day to highlight the hidden water footprint of AI.
We are joining this initiative, led by Corporación NGEN, an organization dedicated to the restoration, promotion, and education around the natural heritage of its community.
On January 31, the municipality launches Quili.AI, a people-powered alternative that invites people from around the world to submit the everyday questions they would normally ask a machine. Instead of being processed by energy-intensive data centers, each query will be answered directly by residents of Quilicura, drawing on lived experience, cultural knowledge, and human judgment. For 24 hours, no servers, cloud computing, or cooling systems will be used.
At Fundación Avina, we support this campaign that brings visibility to the impacts of the widespread use of artificial intelligence in our daily lives. As one of the first organizations in the sector to adopt an internal policy on the use of artificial intelligence, we reaffirm our institutional commitment to ensuring that technology respects human rights, promotes equity, and contributes to a sustainable future.
