Latin America and the Global South: Roots and Future of Fundación Avina

For Fundación Avina, the global South alludes to an incredibly heterogeneous group of nations and people that share a set of geopolitical, socioeconomic, and environmental characteristics as well as the enormous potential to lead our own sustainable development processes and learn from one another through horizontal approaches.

Belonging to the global South is part of Fundación Avina's identity. Having originated in Latin America, Fundación Avina shares a geopolitical and symbolic identity with organizations in other parts of the global South, distinguished by a wealth of natural resources, cultural traditions, and knowledge. This identity enables us to build relationships based on empathy and trust with peers from other parts of the world.

The territory where Fundación Avina works has much in common with other areas of the global South, which is why it is pertinent and relevant for us to operate beyond the borders of Latin America. In 2024, we made investments in 36 countries, the majority of which lie in the global South. To expand beyond Latin America, we brought colleagues from African countries onto our team, and we have a growing number of alliances with local organizations around the world.

The global South is also the starting point for our contextual analysis, setting of priorities, and implementation strategies for our strategic pillars: Climate Action, Just and Regenerative Economy, and Democratic Innovation. Thus, our programs are defined by their relevance for the global South.

As we look to the future, our roots in Latin America shape our vision and the global South serves as our compass. The future will be defined by how we tap into the potential and the wealth of our part of the world.
