From June 1 to 12, the International Labour Conference (ILC), the most important decision-making body of the International Labour Organization (ILO), took place. Representatives of governments, businesses, workers and organizations from the ILO’s more than 180 member states gathered in Geneva, Switzerland, to discuss digital platforms, artificial intelligence, gender equality and social dialogue.

Fundación Avina at the Conference

We participated in the debates and supported partner organizations in this historic discussion, where one of the central topics was the establishment of labour standards in the platform economy, a sector that is transforming the world of work and to which we dedicate a significant part of our collaborative efforts.

Promoting decent working conditions is a fundamental part of building a fair and regenerative economy. For this reason, we engage in and influence global dialogue spaces, strengthening Global South perspectives and advancing more participatory decision-making processes.

Towards Fair Work on Digital Platforms

UNIDAS

At Fundación Avina, we coordinate various collaborative initiatives to generate impact. One of them is UNIDAS, which we promote together with Ethos, ProDESC and Oxfam Mexico, and which seeks to advance a decent work agenda by strengthening the collective organization of women workers in informal and precarious sectors, improving their access to social protection.

In the most recent UNIDAS report, we address the working conditions faced by women on digital platforms. Focused on the Mexican context, the report shows how this model has enabled a form of labour market participation that facilitates balancing work and care responsibilities, although it continues to be marked by a lack of rights and exposure to situations of violence.

Roadmap to Decent Work on Digital Platforms

To help facilitate dialogue around these challenges, we launched the series “Roadmap to Decent Work on Digital Platforms.” These virtual spaces aim to foster multi-stakeholder dialogue around key discussions that have taken place before and after the ILO Conference.

The series seeks to strengthen these exchanges and create opportunities for collaboration among all interested institutions and groups.

Shared Perspectives

We also supported the development of the document “Women Platform Workers Shared Demands: Redefining Platform Labour Standards Through a Feminist Global South Lens”, validated by organizations of women platform workers and bringing together their visions and perspectives from around the world.

This support was provided in collaboration with the Asia-Pacific Forum on Women, Law and Development (APWLD), the Global Platform Workers Solidarity Project (GPWSP) and Women in Informal Employment: Globalizing and Organizing (WIEGO).
