“The Future of Water: 2025 Presidential Elections” is a television program that seeks to inform the public about the main water challenges and publicize the proposals of the leading presidential candidates for 2025.

At Fundación Avina, we are convinced that water security is one of the greatest challenges of our time. Latin America, despite having around 30% of the planet’s fresh water, faces a profound water crisis because of climate challenges, unequal access, contamination of sources, and overexploitation of aquifers. These factors particularly affect the most vulnerable populations, creating tensions between economic development and human rights.

Within this regional scenario, Chile is experiencing a particularly critical situation. According to the World Resources Institute (WRI, 2015), it will be the only Latin American country with an extremely high level of water stress by 2040, placing it among the most threatened in the world due to water scarcity.

This is not just an environmental problem: water scarcity directly compromises health, equity, sustainable development, and democracy. Millions of people, especially in rural areas, face difficulties in accessing drinking water, which affects their quality of life and limits their ability to participate and decide on the present and future of their territories.

Official projections (DGA, 2017) warn of a reduction of up to 50% in rainfall in some areas of the country between 2030 and 2060, accompanied by an increase in temperatures (between 1 and 2.5°C) that will exacerbate evaporation and prolong droughts.

In this context, the Escenarios Hídricos 2030 alliance, promoted by Fundación Chile, Fundación Futuro Latinoamericano, and Fundación Avina, has been working for years to raise awareness of the challenges and propose concrete solutions to move toward a fair water transition.

As part of this effort, it presents the special program “El Futuro del Agua: Presidenciales 2025” (The Future of Water: 2025 Presidential Elections), a co-production with CNN Chile, which seeks to inform the public about the country’s main water challenges and publicize the proposals of the main 2025 presidential candidates on this issue. Through interviews and analysis, this program offers a clear overview of the state of water in Chile and visions for the future, inviting reflection on the urgency of placing water at the center of decision-making, beyond a single presidential term.

“Water is a cross-cutting issue at Fundación Avina that connects with our areas of impact. To guarantee the right to safe water, we promote conversations with decision-makers in various forums. This special program that we organized together with our partners in Chile is an example of the coordination we promote to generate systemic change,” said Florencia Iacopetti, Water Program Manager.

This coordination between organized civil society, the media, and experts is essential. It highlights the need to move toward democratic and sustainable water management that can address an increasingly complex scenario. Any political strategy that does not contemplate a profound transformation in water governance, built with all sectors, will be doomed to failure.

At Fundación Avina, we reaffirm our commitment to an informed and active citizenry, to public policies that guarantee the human right to water, and to water governance based on equity, sustainability, and resilience.
